The Backbeat Magazine Block Party is coming and it is going to be awesome. The block party will be taking over 7th street this Saturday from 2pm to 2am and over 30 bands will be playing The Beauty Bar, The Side Bar and Red 7. Backbeat Magazine is celebrating the launch of their new Austin coverage with this epic show and will even have a dunking booth where you can soak your favorite musicians – if you’re aim is on point, that is. To prepare you for this show, we here at ovrld wanted to put out a couple show previews for y’all. Also, we’ve actually previously featured 8 of the bands in the line-up on this site. Go ahead and check out the full line-up and the links to our posts below to listen to a track and find out a little more about the artists that will be playing this gig.
Within this lineup of the brightest local bands, I definitely recommend that you check out Wild Child. They’re going to be playing at Beauty Bar at 6. Wild Child is an indie folk duo consisting of Alexander Beggins and Kelsey Wilson. They both provide beautiful soulful vocals and the way their voices intertwine is enchanting. The instrumentation is simple; brushed percussion supports guitar, ukulele and piano parts. This simple instrumentation allow the vocals to remain the focal points of the songs. To be honest, I am usually skeptical of this type of boy and girl folk just because it runs the risk of becoming overly saccharine. Yet, for this duo I did not find that to be the case at all. Despite myself, I was singing along to their coordinated “shooby doo wop”s and wondering if they’re actually a couple and if they are, if they’re happy together. But perhaps I got a little too caught up in the emotions of the songs… The bottom line is this: Wild Child is making some beautifully simple and enthralling folk music and if you don’t catch them this weekend they’ll be gone on a nationwide tour for months.
The duo does not currently have much released material out in the wide world of the web just yet but you can find a two song EP at their Bandcamp page and a couple additional tracks at their Facebook page. I am definitely looking forward to hearing some of the unreleased songs they’ll be playing in their set and can’t wait to hear their vocals live.
Carter will be posting up another show preview tomorrow covering another band playing the Backbeat Bash so stay tuned! For now, you can check out the official full lineup below and our most recent posts about some of the artists that will be playing.
