The Shears at Frank
And finally the largest Free Week yet has ended. We took advantage of it hardcore. Over the course of six nights, nine venues, and 31 artists, the OVRLD crew caught a lot of awesome shows – and still only saw a fraction of the amazing music this city has to offer (and a bit of what Houston has as well). Some of what we learned:
– Club Deville’s outdoor stage has the best backdrop in town, especially when it’s being lit up by Zorch’s light show.
– Speaking of light shows, Equals nailed theirs at Antone’s. For folks who don’t usually connect with instrumental rock, it was captivating.
Les RAV at Stubb’s
– We wish our birthdays could start out with a club full of people serenading us, as was the case for Chase Weinacht of Marmalakes at ND when Tuesday turned to Wednesday. Thanks to Wild Child for leading the singalong.
– And speaking of Marmalakes, we love to see collaborations – like when Marmalakes joined the Frontier Brothers onstage at the Parish on Saturday. More, please.
Sorne at Club de Ville
And beside us through much of it were our friends over at Vesper Mag. A relatively new photo blog/zine, their expert photographers joined us on our treks up and down Red River, from the Eastside to the Warehouse district and back again. They captured BK & Mr. E’s band geek stage get-up, Shakey Graves’ unique percussion set-up, The Lonesome Heroes’ Landry McMeans’ sparkly dress, and the light show at the Parish, among so many other things.
