Carter here, coming to you from the great city of Austin, Texas. It’s been too long; how are you? Me, I’m good. You know, just launching this new website – ovrld.com! It stands for “overload” and is meant to sift through the gauntlet of musical information out there.
As some of you know, I’ve been blogging on a dinky little WordPress site for over a year now – just writing about whatever music-related thing that struck my fancy. That was all well and good, but it had a fairly limited ceiling. It was time for something new and different.
Hence, ovrld.com. Rather than try to give my impressions on the entire music world, I decided it was much more reasonable to cover something specific. The problem is, I love a lot of genres and artists. And I know you do too. It seems like the wrong kind of limiting to just talk about chillwave or post-rock or whatever other subgenre we all happen to like today.
In and amongst all this, I witnessed how long it took me to make inroads into the Austin music scene. It’s massive, with bands from any imaginable genre playing every night of the week at dozens of venues of around town. As a new Austinite, I had no idea where to start. It felt like starting Lost in Season 4 – I couldn’t tell what the fuck was going on.
So that’s what we’re doing here: giving you a place to start. You’ll be able to find mp3s from the city’s best bands, as well as interviews with them, reviews of shows and albums – everything you’ll need to know what’s going on in the live music capital of the world. I hope it’ll be helpful even for those of you who never make it to Austin. You can catch these bands when they come to your town!
You’ll also notice that I’ve used the word “we.” I got tired of providing only my own opinion, and I think that this site will be more relevant and interesting with multiple voices. To that end, there’s a team of talented music fans working on this site with me, and you’ll be getting to know each of them over the coming weeks and beyond. But I’ll let them each introduce themselves.
But enough chitter chatter for now. Tomorrow, we’ll be letting the music drop with an interview with a band celebrating its seventh year in Austin. And the day after, we’ll hear a couple of new songs from some fresh faces on the scene. Hope you’re excited! I certainly am.
Much love,
Carter
