AMA #3: Quiet Company

There’s just something really nice about well executed, catchy, pop music. We have developed such a jaded and bitter musical culture that’s its really nice to just hear a group of musicians going for it. When people commit to making music that’s fun and inclusive it always reminds me why I fell in love with this stuff in the first place. Quiet Company’s strength is their lack of self-consciousness; by letting their music be catchy and sentimental without a shred of embarrassment, they carry a likeability factor not seen in many unsigned bands.

And yet that’s the confusing part. Quiet Company should be blasting out of a dorm room on every floor in America. I could easily see them opening for Ben Folds or jamming with Death Cab For Cutie. There’s just that right combination of intimacy and universality, you feel like you’re the only person who knows about them and you want to rub it in all your friend’s faces. They’re perfect for college. Just check out the gang vocals on “How Do You Do It” or the extended sing-a-long chorus on “If You Want” both from the 2010 Songs For Staying In E.P. It’s kind of hard not to like listening to them.

That’s not to say they haven’t been noticed. They were the first unsigned band to ever receive rotation on Austin’s 3 major rock stations; KUT, KGSR, and 101X. Their songs have been used on Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Real World, and Married To Rock. They even had a walk on role on My Generation. It’s kind of astounding that with all of this buzz they haven’t received more national attention.

So check them out. Their next show will be a KGSR unplugged set at The Grove on April 28th. Or hit up their website, where you can stream all of their albums.
