Afrofuturist auteur Upper Reality is back with Silver, an EP that showcases the further ascent of her sound, the dreamy beats making her already smooth vocals practically silky. While much of the current Austin R&B scene is either a throwback to gritty Southern soul or frequently bombastic club work, Upper Reality’s softer approach and spacy production make her stand out as someone pushing things forward rather than perpetually looking back or replicating existing hits. Though Upper Reality describes Silver as “an exploration into inadequacy,” her talent and ambition are anything but inadequate.
