It makes perfect sense that ’70s pop rock enthusiasts Salem Walk would seek out Youth Racket mastermind and Mondo Fuzz creator Andy Ray Lemon to direct their video “Mystery Design.” Both parties are connoisseurs of vintage aesthetic and tone, their work feeling like actual lost artifacts rather than modern day knockoffs, a difficult feat to pull off in the digital era. “Mystery Design” is a superb example of those skills, looking as though it was dredged out of The Old Grey Whistle Test’s archives, complete with natural grain, washed out psychedelia filters and tracking glitches. The song itself is an entrancing delight too, carefully composed and arranged but loose enough to feel comforting rather than sterile. Check it out for yourself, then catch the band live at the Blackheart this Saturday, October 28th!
