Exclusive Video Premiere: Name Sayers “Gravedancer”

Apocalyptic musical outfit Name Sayers have always offered up an eclectic approach to Americana, with elements of Nick Cave goth rock sitting comfortably next to more traditional Texan boogie and Death Valley glazed country rock. But the ominously named “Gravedancer” takes that to new extremes with its infusion of Depeche Mode style electro hoot and holler to Devin James Fry’s trademark snake handler growl. The video, which we’re simultaneously pleased and terrified to present, frames that in literal serpentine imagery, switching between nerve wracking scenes of a westerner about to be drawn and quartered and the slithery things getting all excited in the ground around him, while occult imagery appears in flashes over top. Lyrically, the song connects the genocidal mayhem of our manifest destiny to the equally cruel treatment of today’s immigrant population, as some victims fantasize about the day when they’ll be able to dance on the graves of their oppressors. We probably shouldn’t suggest you find any ICE fascists to rope up like the suffering white man in this video, but we can’t say we would shed a tear if you did…
