ACL 2012 Review Through Instagram

Published on October 19th, 2012

A major component of ACL’s social media campaign this year centered around my favorite social networking platform, Instagram. Tag your photos #aclfest and they too could wind up in the ACL app or on the giant screens that festooned the various stages around Zilker Park.

Unfortunately, none of my #aclfest photos made it on the big screen. So Carter and Dan graciously agreed to allow me to share some of my favorite moments of the festival — in pictorial form. Be warned, all photos were taken with my iPhone camera, so high quality concert photos, these are not. Festivals tend to be about both the music you see and the people you were with when you saw them. I tried to include a little of both.

Day 1 at ACL

Day 1 at ACL

My first band this year? The Afghan Whigs. I thought they sounded great, but the crowd of rabid, 40-year something fans really resonated with me. There's nothing quite like seeing a grey-haired dude dance without any inhibitions as his wife takes pictures of him acting like a teenager. Running into an old friend during this nostalgic set? Made the moment even better.

Til Tomorrow ACL

Til Tomorrow ACL

Goodbye ACL. Black Keys and Florence + the Machine offered a great way to end the first night, even if the Black Keys lacked some energy and Florence was a bit pitchy. Ah, the joys of everyone being a music critic.

Caveman Playing on Saturday

Caveman Playing on Saturday

Shout-out to Caveman - a great band with a terrible name. "Old Friend" was even better live than the recording.

Zola Jesus in the Crowd

Zola Jesus in the Crowd

Zola Jesus is a very small lady. When she walked next to me in the crowd during the end of her set, my 5'10" frame felt giant.

Gardens & Villas

Gardens & Villas

Gardens & Villas, making quivers of flutes a thing. Plus they did the best cover I've ever heard of Fleetwood Mac's "Gypsy," so I will forgive all fashion transgressions.

Carter and Jen

Carter and Jen

Carter & I watched Father John Misty together -- who sounded beautiful. But to my great disappointment, he did not launch into a Sartre lecture. Shortly after this…

A Rainy Saturday at ACL

… the heavens opened and poured down on us. How quickly my cute outfit becomes a luxury of the past.

Michael Kwanuka

Michael Kwanuka

Fortunately we had already taken a gamble on Michael Kiwanuka. Both of us love his Jimmy Hendrix inspired guitar stylings. That man is a musician in every sense of the word.

BASSNECTAR'S Light Show

BASSNECTAR'S Light Show

BASSNECTAR made it impossible to hear Steve Earle. Carter and I decided that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. I think he was pretty gobsmacked at the visual production values associated with this act.

Alt-J On Stage

Alt-J On Stage

I pushed my way to the rail for Alt-J. I had been raving previously about this band, and I swear, they were even better live. So much harmonizing, so many cute British accents.

Jen in the Shade

Jen in the Shade

Sometimes all you want to do is sit in the shade and listen to Kimbra. So I did that. And it was good.

Moon Duo Playing the Austin Ventures Stage

Moon Duo Playing the Austin Ventures Stage

Moon Duo offered up sexy shoe gaze at the Austin Ventures stage. The crowd was small, but enthralled. I really wish the set could've been at night in a room with some echoes.

Polica on Stage

Polica on Stage

I braved the hordes of teenage girls for Poliça. And it was worth every second of associated angst. She sounded like a cross between Sade and Everything But the Girl.

Die Antwoord Plays to a Crazy Crowd

Die Antwoord Plays to a Crazy Crowd

"Well… that happened." The young and angry crowd at Die Antwoord put me at a loss for words. We saw blood drinking, nipple tape on 15 year old girls, blow-up dolls, and a fist fight over an open umbrella.

Crystal Castles ACL 2012

Crystal Castles ACL 2012

Crystal Castles always blows my mind. Best performance of ACL, even though half the time Alice Glass was in the crowd, nearly invisible.
