We try to mix things up here at Ovrld, so while we enjoy a good Hoot Night as much as the next sentient website, we figured there had to be a more interesting way of approaching the time tested tradition of bands covering other, bigger bands. Then Ashley Bradley and Maximillian Meehan of Beerland came up with an idea that we hope will be a recurring thing: let’s get local bands to cover their peers.
It didn’t hurt that for the first event we had an incredible line-up of coverers and coverees, with Pleasure Venom taking on their heroes A Giant Dog, Borzoi honoring the sorely missed White Bronco and Popper Burns imitating reigning weirdo kings Big Bill. All of the groups that were being covered turned out for the event, with Steve from White Bronco even joining Borzoi on stage for some guest guitar heroics, and the Bills exchanging unibrow styling tips with the sweethearts in Popper Burns. It also made for an especially epic closer as the fashionably late Sabrina Ellis convinced the venue to stay open a little bit longer just so she and the rest of A Giant Dog could see Pleasure Venom run through a couple more A Giant Dog songs. If you missed out this time, keep your eyes peeled for info on future installments of Other People’s Songs!
